02 关于ALPENGLOW实验室

03 职位描述

01 About School

The Aerospace Engineering department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) is the largest of its kind in the country, with 2,145 Bachelor of Science students, 110 Master of Science students and 68 Ph.D. students as of Fall 2023. Our undergraduate program ranks No. 4 in the country, above some elite Aerospace Engineering programs, and No. 1 in the state of Florida. Our graduate program is currently ranked 25th in the nation and No. 2 in the state of Florida. Our department is striving for diversity, equity and inclusion of all students. The Daytona Beach campus is located just one hour from the Kennedy Space Center, SpaceX launch center, Blue Origin factory, and Cape Canaveral. The rocket launched from Cape Canaveral becomes visible from the campus approximately 14 seconds later. All above have made ERAU an ideal place for pursuing a Ph.D. degree in aerospace engineering.

02 About ALPENGLOW Lab

ALPENGLOW Lab is Dr. Hao Peng’s research lab at ERAU, Daytona Beach, Florida. “Alpenglow” is an optical phenomenon that appears as a horizontal reddish glow near the horizon opposite to the sun. More relevantly here, it is the acronym for “Aerospace Lab of PENG for Leaders Of the World.” Dr. Peng obtained his Ph.D. in 2016 from Beihang University in China and has joined ERAU as an assistant professor since Fall 2023. We not only carry out pioneering research in space exploration but also train students to succeed and be leaders in the space industry. The lab currently focuses on theoretical astrodynamics and practical machine learning studies for aerospace engineering applications. Current projects include cislunar constellation design, reinforcement learning for attitude recovery, mega-constellation-based space situational awareness, and reinforcement learning-based space debris analysis.

03 Position Description

Two fully funded Ph.D. positions are available until the positions are fulfilled (check the lab page for the latest information). Accepted students will carry out a four-year study under the supervision of Dr. Peng. Besides standard tuition and stipends, presentations at international conferences will be sponsored.Required qualifications:

  • Strong interest in space exploration.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in related fields: mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, control theory, robotics, computer science, computer science, etc.
  • Organized, self-disciplined, and self-motivated.
  • Good writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Good programming skills in at least one language, such MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Fortran, etc.
