大英博物馆于2023年获得欧盟研究最高级金ERC-Synergy和英国国家创新基金UKRI资助,成立项目组Horsepower(骏工程),由大英博物馆亚洲部藏品负责人、牛津大学博士生导师刘睿良教授领导,致力于通过古代DNA、碳十四、材料科学等各种科技考古手段研究蒙古草原和中原地区的史前互动关系,项目为期6年,将与来自法国、德国、蒙古、中国等多家团队合作进行。

Role Summary

Research Assistant: Radiocarbon Chronology Modeller

About the role

The postholder will apply radiocarbon dating and other dating methods to Mongolian and Chinese archaeology to build up an overarching chronological sequence and to map the spread of metal, horses, various burial practices other archaeological phenomena investigated through an ERC Synergy project Horsepower.

Key areas of responsibility

  • To sample various archaeological sites in Mongolia, China and other related regions for radiocarbon dating and monitor the lab protocol (pretreatment, AMS dating, etc) and the quality of samples and dating results.
  • To apply experience and creativity in Bayesian and other statistical approaches to build up chronology on individual-site, regional and continental scales.
  • To critically evaluate existing approaches applied to spatially resolved 14C data.
  • To use site chronologies derived from Bayesian models of multiple 14C dates to reconstruct the dispersal of horses, metals and related archaeological phenomena across the study region.
  • To use the C14 dates to inform interpretation of other project data, such as aDNA, typological information and palaeo-environmental reconstruction, thus obtaining, for example, artefact chronologies and chronologies for other patterns emerging from this project.
  • To critically evaluate observed patterns using sensitivity tests and simulation models and to apply creativity to finding solutions to gaps in the datasets.
  • To produce high quality reports including graphical presentation and statistical analysis.

  • Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team but to lead on key aspects of role
  • Clear evidence of planning, organising and optimising work of self
  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Experience of working in an international multi-team research environment
  • Archaeological Fieldwork experience
  • Teaching experience
