招生信息

弗吉尼亚理工大学生物医学与病理生物学系计划招收1-2名2024年秋季入学全奖生物医学博士研究生。申请人需具备微生物学及免疫学等相关学科学士或硕士学位。我们尤其欢迎具有免疫学、蛋白质组学、微生物菌群、以及动物感染模型等研究背景,且有志于从事科学研究的同学申请。博士学习期间将围绕耐药性金黄色葡萄球菌感染机制、金黄色葡萄球菌外泌体及其致病性、宿主免疫机制、以及兽用疫苗等相关领域开展研究工作。课题组鼓励探索与创新,具体研究方向及课题可根据个人的研究兴趣及专业背景与指导老师讨论。

导师及院系介绍

王小刚博士将于2024年夏季作为助理教授加入弗吉尼亚理工大学生物医学与病理生物学系(Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology)。该系所属的弗吉尼亚-马里兰联合兽医学院成立于1978年,下设多所动物临床教学医院及研究部门,研究涉及与动物及人类疾病相关的感染、免疫等多个领域。该学院拥有接近130名教授和超过500名生物医学及兽医学各类研究生,可提供生物医学和兽医学硕博士学位及公共卫生学硕士学位。王小刚博士先后在四川大学和中国科学院大学获得学士和博士学位,随后分别在美国堪萨斯大学医学中心、加州大学伯克利分校、及哈佛医学院从事博士后研究。王小刚博士目前担任哈佛大学医学院和附属Brigham and Women’s Hospital感染疾病科讲师和独立PI, 研究方向为耐药性金黄色葡萄球菌的致病机理、金黄色葡萄球菌外泌体、以及宿主免疫。其研究工作近年来得到多项NIH项目资助,研究成果先后发表于Nature Communications, PNAS, mBio等多个杂志。

申请要求

1.生物学相关领域 (包括微生物及免疫学)的学士或硕士毕业,且对学术研究具有浓厚兴趣

2.优先考虑具有一定免疫学、蛋白质组学、及微生物菌群研究背景,且对动物实验模型感兴趣的申请人

The main campus of Virginia Tech is in Blacksburg, a beautiful town nestled on a plateau between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. Recruitment information

Dr. Wang’s group in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at Virginia Tech is seeking highly motivated graduate students (1-2 PhD students) to begin in the fall of 2024 to pursue research on the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus infections, extracellular membrane vesicles, and vaccine studies. We are seeking students who are passionate about research, motivated to explore new ideas, and willing to work in a team environment.

A strong background in one or more of these areas is required: microbial pathogenesis, immunology, and microbiome. The candidates are expected to have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

About mentor

Dr. Xiaogang Wang will join the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology of Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech as assistant professor in August 2024. Dr. Wang is currently an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and associate microbiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Wang’s research interest is in the pathogenesis of staphylococcal diseases, host innate immune defense, and vaccine development. His current work focuses on the biogenesis of S. aureus extracellular vesicles (MVs), the role of MVs in S. aureus-host interactions, and application of engineered bacterial MVs. Dr. Wang’s research on S. aureus has been well funded by NIH (R01 and R21) in the past several years, and his work has been published in prestigious journals, such as Nature Communications, PNAS, and mBio. Dr. Wang will continue his research in the field of S. aureus after moving to the Virginia Tech in next year.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for a PhD position in DBSP at Virginia Tech, you are expected to:

•hold a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in microbiology or immunology, or from related fields.

•TOEFL score:90 (IBT)

•Optional GRE (Minimum Scores): 150 Verbal, 150 Quantitative

•GPA: Equivalent of a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

•Academic and professional goals statement describing research experience and plans for research in your graduate studies.

•Three letters of recommendation, preferably from faculty members at colleges attended who are familiar with the applicant’s academic and research capabilities.
